'Yoga will increasingly be part of everyday life': Melissa Chu on staying fit and maintaining well-being in cooler weather

Inspired by her passion for yoga, Melissa Chu founded eco-conscious activewear brand RUMI X in 2014 to offer women a range of modern and stylish yoga apparel that both looks and feels good. Using ground coffee beans and plastic water bottles to develop her fabrics, Melissa transforms these recyclable materials into the vibrant and unique designs that have soon become the signature style of RUMI X.

Based in Hong Kong, RUMI X can be found in stores throughout Asia and even as far away as Holland, and can be shipped throughout the world. Pieces are suitable for not only yoga but also CrossFit, running, Barre, and pretty much any active sport that makes you feel good.

With the arrival of fall, Relaxnews spoke to Melissa for her advice on how yoga, nutrition and meditation can see you through the change in seasons and help you achieve the "feel good factor" even during the colder winter months.

You're originally from San Francisco, California, but are now based in Hong Kong. What are the latest fitness trends for women in Hong Kong and Asia? Are there are new classes or sports that becoming more popular that could give us some workout ideas for fall?

Surfset (exercising on a surfboard), SUP Yoga (yoga on a stand up paddleboard) and Barre are the latest fitness trends, especially in Hong Kong. There are new studios for barre classes and lots of SUP Yoga classes during the summer season.

In the past few years different styles of yoga have also grown in popularity and many new trends have emerged. What do you think will be the next big thing in yoga?

Incorporating 'yoga' into your everyday life, and not only the mat.

What is your own personal favorite style of yoga and why?

Hatha, I like a nice and slow-paced deep stretch.

As a certified yoga teacher, how would you advise someone who has never tried yoga before to get started?

Relax, take a deep breath and try your best. Go with it, there's no judgment, and accept the transformation that's taking place right before you!

And how can those who are already yoga fans take their practice to the next level?

Incorporate pranayama breathing exercises into your practice. It's an active meditation that helps to further cleanse your body and soul.

Other than yoga, how do you look after your own health on a daily basis?

I like to wake up early and take long walks with my dog up the peak in Hong Kong. It's my morning meditation, and my quiet calm before the start of busy day. It's also breathtaking to see the gorgeous views from the top! One of my morning rituals also includes taking a spoonful of apple cider vinegar to stimulate my digestion and to cleanse my system. It's got a real kick!

As we move into fall, how will you ensure you stay healthy through the change in seasons and the colder winter months?

Definitely drink more warm teas and stay warm and hydrated. I also love cooking in the fall season because there are so many of my favorite seasonal fruits and veggies available, it's a great time to cook more hearty meals.

What is your favorite healthy breakfast to set you up for the day?

1 full egg, 1 egg white and avocado toast.

And how do you like to refuel after a yoga workout?

Coconut water and almonds.

Do you have any guilty pleasures that you like to indulge in?

I love spicy food -- the spicier the better!

Finally, what is your motto for living a healthier, fitter, and happier life?

"Everything in the Universe is within you. Ask all from yourself" - RUMI
