Year in Review 2020: Yahoo Singapore readers’ most searched beauty brands

Makeup usage may have taken a downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it certainly did not stop people from searching up skincare products to deal with the maskne (face mask acne) that came with the prolonged usage of masks.

With a lessening need to put on makeup, it was perhaps a year where many took the chance to rejuvenate their skin. We have rounded up the top ten most searched beauty brands by Yahoo Singapore readers in 2020.

10. Clinique

As part of the Estee Lauder Company, beauty brand Clinique is a known for their moisturising beauty products. Clinique’s Moisture Surge series of skincare products is a fan favourite, especially during quarantine. Being the first global beauty brand to do away with the concept of a one-size-fits-all face cream, Clinique’s Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto Replenishing Hydrator is said to boost moisture by 152% and can be worn under makeup.

9. Etude House

Undeterred by the pandemic, South Korean makeup brand Etude House’s makeup kits, including their latest Fall collection, Muhly Romance and Leather Shop, continues to be a hit amongst shoppers. The brand’s frequent collaborations with Disney, offering limited edition packaging for their lip and skin products, is also highly sought-after amongst fans.

8. Browhaus

A one-stop brow & lash grooming salon, Browhaus has stores in Singapore, London, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Manila, Bangkok, and Jakarta. The brand’s Brow Resurrection service is developed in-house and creates realistic hair strands, then using an advanced embroidery technique to create natural-looking strokes.

Well-known for their usage of Korean Ginseng and medicinal herbs in their skincare products, Sulwhasoo focuses on encouraging women of all ages to be confident in their skin. Their Concentrated Ginseng Rescue Ampoule launched in 2020 contains active beauty ginsenoside Ginsenomics™ with anti-ageing effect and highly concentrated Ginseng Berry that provides intensive care for irritated damaged skin, suitable for those suffering from maskne during the pandemic.

Founded in 2007, Skin Inc. is a homegrown brand that is now present in over 78 cities in Asia, Europe and the United States. South Korean beauty brand Laneige has been in the front lines when it comes to the research and development of moisturising mechanisms in skincare products. The brand’s Perfect Renew Youth series is an anti-ageing collection that promises to reduce the signs of early ageing and make skin firm and smooth.

4. Kiehl’s

The original Kiehl’s apothecary first served patrons in New York City in 1851 and has since expanded across the globe with more than 250 retail outlets under the brand. Both of Kiehl’s new skincare products, Vital Skin Strengthening Super Serum and Super Multi-Corrective Cream, focus on their anti-ageing capabilities and are popular regardless of genders.

The former helps correct signs of ageing and revives tired-looking dull skin, while the latter works as a multi-targeted anti-ageing moisturiser that corrects the most visible signs of ageing.

3. Innisfree

Marketed as an eco-friendly brand, South Korean skincare company Innisfree sources many of their products’ ingredients from Jeju Island. The brand released a series of new Jeju Blending Tea Hand Cream hand creams in 2020, Midnight Apricot Tea and Daylight Rose Tea scents. Olive-derived wax and shea butter help keep hands soft and moisturised while the calming scent of blended tea aims to remind users of the relaxed lifestyle in Jeju.

2. The Body Shop

Started in 1976, The Body Shop was a small green shop in Brighton before it became a worldwide beauty chain, as a subsidiary of the Natura & Co group, with over 3000 retail stores. Adding the Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask to their Himalayan Charcoal skincare line, the sustainable mask is made with bamboo charcoal from the Himalayan foothills, green tea leaves and Community Fair Trade tea tree oil. It is touted to give a healthy-looking glow while unclogging pores.

1. Sephora

Founded in 1970, Sephora is a beauty-retail chain that supports an open-sell environment, allowing classic and emerging brands, as well as Sephora’s private label, to be sold in their outlets. Operating approximately 1,900 stores in 29 countries worldwide, Sephora carries limited edition products for various brands and regularly holds closed-door sales for their members.

To combat the COVID-19 restrictions, Sephora did away with self-testing in-store but instead started Beauty Advisor assisted testing where products will be provided on a single-use applicator to swatch.
