Yayoi Kusama's solo exhibition Recent Paintings ends this Saturday
SINGAPORE – If you missed Yayoi Kusama's large colourful polka-dotted artworks and infinity installations at the National Gallery Singapore in 2017, here's another chance to catch the artist's other works in the form of 15 monochromatic paintings and sculptural forms.
The solo exhibition, Recent Paintings, features works from the series 'My Eternal Soul', which were made from 2019 to 2020, and mirror-finished stainless steel forms from 'Clouds' in 2019.
According to OTA Fine Arts, the curator of this exhibition, Kusama began working intensively on a body of 100 x 100 cm monochrome paintings in 2019. Unlike other paintings of the same series, the bright and vibrant colours have disappeared. Instead, bold black lines envelop the canvas together with the iconic artist's wealth of varied motifs: eyes, faces, biomorphic shapes, nets and dots. These new paintings synthesise contrasting concepts and forms of positive and negative spaces, figuration and abstraction, and microscopic and macroscopic views of the universe.
In 'Clouds', stainless steel cloud-like shapes surround the floors of the gallery. They echo, reflect, and complement the lines in Kusama’s paintings, creating at once an expansive yet immersive atmosphere that allows for imagination beyond the walls of the gallery.
This is the first time these works of Kusama's are being shown in Southeast Asia. You can also view the exhibition in an online viewing room.
