Yahoo Review: Dishoom

Cast: John Abraham, Varun Dhawan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Saqib Saleem, Akshaye Khanna

Direction: Rohit Dhawan

Rating: **½

‘Dishoom’ is such a wasted opportunity. Rohit Dhawan has all the elements but he falters in the execution.

Just look at the premise – India’s top batsman (played by Saqib Saleem) is kidnapped, and two cops – played by John Abraham and Varun Dhawan – are entrusted with the job of finding him before the crucial India-Pakistan finals. The plot had all the makings of a blockbuster.

In fact, they managed to get quite an ensemble cast – John Abraham as the brawny, no-nonsense top cop; Varun Dhawan, as the rookie cop, is funny, yet, efficient; Saqib Saleem, as a cricketer in top form, bleeds blue and refuses to be bribable; and Akshaye Khanna, plays the suave villain. Jacqueline Fernandez and Nargis Fakhri in cameos are entrusted with handling the glamour quotient. So, our director ensures that the film looks good.

Rohit Dhawan does a good job of getting the canvas right, too – the city landscape, the dusty heartland, the pulsating stadium: it’s all spot on.

I can’t even fault the acting by the cast.

It is just that the narrative lacks jus. It just doesn’t come together as a compelling entertainer. In fact, the climax just borders on the absurd. I don’t want to reveal the plot, but for a moment I was reminded of Tuffy (remember, the intuitive dog from ‘Hum Aapke Hai Kaun’) and how crucial he was to the happenings in that film.

I wish a film that looked so good, would have felt that good as well.

Despite all the swag, this is one is tepid show.
