Believe it or not, body-shaming is still an issue many women have to contend with – even if you’re a super fit WWE wrestler.

The WWE community have sent messages of support to professional wrestler, Peyton Royce, after she was criticised about her weight in a radio interview.

Journalist Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter said that Royce used to be “a lot lighter” and agreed that she “was more attractive” earlier back in April 2018.

*Sigh*.

Naturally, Peyton didn’t let the comments go without a fight and responded by asking Meltzer if she would prefer it if she “starved” herself.

“This is how nightmares for young women start,” Royce tweeted in response to the interview clip which was posted online. “The females in your life must be proud.”

Her comments lead other wrestlers to send messages of support.

Fellow WWE wrestler Bet Copeland said the the comments proved the “destructiveness of body shaming on young people” and that “our kids deserve better from us.”

Wrestling commentator, Renee Young, took her description of Meltzer a little further, calling him a “true piece of sweltering hot garbage”.

She finished her tweet by saying “let’s set better examples.”

Royce’s wrestling partner and fellow NXT Superstar, Billy Kay, told Meltzer “You have no idea how stupid comments like this can affect someone for life.”

Kay broke into sports-entertainment alongside Royce and the duo as both signed to NXT at the same time.

Meltzer later apologised for his comments, saying that Royce is “an exceedingly attractive woman” and stating that he “realises the lengths and pressures on women in the entertainment world to maintain unnatural looks”.

Too little too late we think.

Royce is part of WWE’s roster of ‘Superstars’ and her bio on the official website says: “Peyton Royce carries herself with the grace and elegance of a young Sophia Loren, but once the bell rings, her raging-bull temperament takes over.’
