The world’s first Vagina Museum is set to open in Camden Market, London after a crowdfunding campaign raised over £50,000 from supporters across the globe.

Designed to debunk myths and combat negative stigma shrouding the body part, the museum will regularly host exhibitions, workshops and film screenings on topics including body image, consent, mental health and sexuality.

The history-making site will also provide an outreach programme supporting healthy and inclusive sex and relationships education while services and support will also be offered to trans and intersex communities.

The project kick-started in March 2017 after director Florence Schechter discovered that while there are penis museums aplenty - for instance, the famous tourist hotspot in Reykjavík, Iceland - there was no equivalent for the vagina.

A recent report conducted by gynaecological cancer research charity Eve Appeal found that 65% of young British women have a problem using the words ‘vagina’ and ‘vulva’.

“This is a part of the body that should be celebrated,” Schechter said. “The museum is a fantastic way to spread the message that there is nothing shameful or offensive about vaginas and vulvas.”

The Vagina Museum will open to the public with its debut exhibition, ‘Muff Busters: Vagina Myths and How To Fight Them’, on November 16.
