Just a couple of weeks ago, the world’s most expensive rice was launched in Singapore. Come November, about 16 coffee aficionados will get to taste what’s been dubbed as the world’s most expensive coffee by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP).
According to The Coffee Academics in a press release on Monday (16 October), the coffee chain said that a pound of Esmeralda Geisha coffee from Panama’s Hacienda La Esmeralda farm had fetched a sum of US$601 (S$813) during an auction in August. This racks up to over S$80,000 for 100 pounds of the coffee that will be brought to Singapore for a special tasting session in conjunction with GastroMonth on 5 November.
The Coffee Academics will be presenting the Esmeralda Geisha coffee during a workshop at its outlet at Scotts Square shopping centre. Those interested in joining the workshop will need to purchase a ticket priced from $128 each. If you’d like to taste the coffee, you will need to purchase it at $85 a cup.
Only less than 80 cups will be available and the coffees will be prepared according to the brewing method of your choice. The workshop is limited to just 16 seats.
The Geisha coffee originated from the Gesha village in Ethiopia and is known for its strong aroma and floral notes. The coffee was cultivated in the mountainous region of Boquete, at 1,800 metres above sea level. During SCAP’s auction, the coffee earned 94.1 out of 100 points due to its “distinctive and unrivalled cup profile”.
Strictly speaking, if coffee processed through animals’ digestive systems (such as kopi luwak) were included in the ranking, the title of most expensive coffee would go to the “elephant poop” coffee, which fetches the eye-watering price of US$2000 per kilogram.
