Lately, everyone has been talking about the new dessert store founded by popular Singaporean Youtuber, Jianhao Tan, which officially opened its doors on the 8 August 2016.

Joining the bandwagon, we decided to head down to WooW located at Plaza Singapura to see for ourselves if its shaved ice dessert is really worth the hype.

As the Bingsu store specializes in bright hues of shaved ice, it is only fitting that the inviting store front is multi-coloured as well.

Featuring an open space layout with minimalist furniture, tables and chairs are scattered around the area for patrons to enjoy their icy treat.

With a wide array of flavours to choose from, you will simply be spoilt for choice. Customers can either choose between a single flavoured shaved ice or go for their signature rainbow snow. Both are served with two toppings of your choice and a generous scoop of ice cream.

We eventually opted for their signature WooW Rainbow Snow and Halloween special, the Black Passion shaved ice.

WooW’s trademark, the Rainbow shaved ice features seven types of flavours in a single serving. Layers of coloured ice are stacked on top of each other to form a rainbow effect that is definitely aesthetically-pleasing.

The snow ice itself is infused with flavours ranging from Taro (Purple), Cotton Candy (Blue), Apple (Green), Mango (Yellow), Yuzu (Orange) and lastly Strawberry (Red). The Taro tier was a pleasant surprise as the yam tasted authentic. I personally felt that the other flavours were lacking in comparison to the Taro as they weren’t really distinguishable in taste. Perhaps it was due to the bottom few tiers melting off too quickly before we could properly get to them.

To top it off, we went with the caramelised cookie crumbs and blueberries to accompany the chilly dessert. The blueberries helped to balance out the sweetness of the shaved ice and the cookie crumbs were of course, a welcome addition.

Are you game to try this graveyard of a Bingsu? With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to sample their seasonal offering. True to the spirit of Halloween, the shaved ice served was entirely black. The one gripe we had with the flavour itself was that we couldn’t taste the passion fruit.

Other than that, the overall presentation of the dessert was great. The Oreo crumbs appeared to be used as “gravel” scattered around the cup and red jelly was added for a bloodied effect. The two lychees filled with blueberries and drenched in strawberry sauce in the centre certainly upped the spook factor as they resembled eyeballs. Mad props for the innovation!

So were we woowed by their Bingsu?

We felt that it was slightly on the sweeter side, and by definition, this was more a shaved ice than a bingsu. That being said, this might appeal to those with a sweeter tooth. While it was pretty pricey for the serving portion, it was undeniably Instagram-worthy. Not to mention, the perfect way to chill out in Singapore’s hot and humid weather.

So if you are a fan of Jianhao or are all about supporting local startups, be sure to drop by WooW to try their one-of-a-kind Bingsu creations.
