A hotel which is “just for women” has opened up on the Spanish island of Majorca.

Som Doma Hotel is a 39-room destination for women looking to “disconnect from the stress of daily life that offers personalised care tailored to their needs”.

The ‘no men allowed’ spot is located near Porto Cristo, a small town on the Balearic island (which is spelt ‘Mallorca’ in the Spanish language).

It is open to women aged 14 and above, according to the hotel’s website, and offers: “A broad range of services and plans designed specifically for a feminine audience that will turn your stay into an unforgettable experience.”

Features include a wellness centre offering spa treatments; a restaurant and bar offering “flexitarian” style dining; a beach-style pool surrounded by bali beds (a type of outdoor daybed complete with a mattress); and a rooftop terrace.

Four-star Som Dom is believed to be Spain’s first women-only hotel. There are other women-only hotels elsewhere in the world, such as Luthan Hotel and Spa in Saudi Arabia. Some travel websites, such as Halal Booking, offers resorts in Turkey and Morocco with women-only pools.

However, it is not a totally male-free zone as there are some male members of staff working there, to keep up with Spanish gender discrimination laws, according to the Mirror.

There has been some discussion in recent years around women-only initiatives.

In 2017, Swedish comedian Emma Knyckare organised the first ever women-only music festival, called Statement Festival, after the country’s largest music event was cancelled following a string of sexual assault and rape complaints.

Yet, the same festival was found guilty of discrimination by Sweden’s Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) a year later.
