A mum-to-be cancelled her upcoming baby shower after family and friends questioned her choice of name for her unborn child.

She announced in a Facebook group for the baby shower’s would-be guests that she would be cancelling the event.

In the post, which was later shared on Reddit, the woman explains she is throwing a smaller party instead, because she believes some of the guests have been ‘talking shit’ about her planned baby name: Squire Sebastian Senator.

She writes: “To say this frankly, my friends and family have treated me like total shit. They’ve spread rumors and lies about my child.

“No, I am not crazy. No, I am not mentally unstable. No, I was not drunk when I named my child.”

She also goes on to explain Squire Sebastian Senator is not her child’s full name, but in actual fact just his first name, nor will he be allowed to go by a nickname.

Reddit users had a field day with the amusing post.

One person wrote: “He’s the first kid ever to come home from school with the nickname ‘Stinky’ and be happy about it.”

Another joked: “This could be the first ever child to run away from home before he’s born.”

Others seemed genuinely concerned for the child’s welfare, with one writing: “Lmao you know this kid is going to get bullied for the rest of his life. He’s probably going to have two middle names and a hyphenated last name as well.”

While Squire Sebastian Senator is certainly an unusual name choice, another mother recently got criticised for naming her daughter Abcde.

Traci Redford, from Texas in the US, said she was at California’s John Wayne Airport when a Southwest Airlines gate agent started “pointing and laughing” at her daughter.

But while the family had a lot of support after the name shaming, many slammed the mother for choosing the rare name for her child.
