Winona Ryder just got awesomely real about women being shamed for showing emotion

If you’re a super sensitive woman, then join us in tipping our hats to Winona Ryder, who recently called BS on the degrading manner in which the press treats emotionally transparent women.

“I’m so sick of people shaming women for being sensitive or vulnerable. It’s so bizarre to me,” the Stranger Things actress told NY Mag.

We wholeheartedly second that emotion. Although Ryder was specifically referencing the media’s role in sensitivity-shaming, her statements go a long way towards helping everyday women who can relate to how it feels to basically go through life like an exposed nerve ending, and sadly, feeling the need to apologize for it.

People tend to nonchalantly advise you to suck it up and dry your tears, not knowing how much they’ve hurt your feelings in the process. This attitude can be particularly brutal for women, who receive so much crap about being more emotionally fragile than men despite evidence to the contrary.

Fortunately, Ryder deals with being labeled as “supersensitive” in a positive way.

“I wish I could unknow this, but there is a perception of me that I’m supersensitive and fragile,” she said. “And I am supersensitive, and I don’t think that that’s a bad thing. To do what I do, I have to remain open.”

She also acknowledged how being open about her feelings and her battle with anxiety and depression has helped others.

“I’ve always been super-private and protective of certain experiences and certain friends,” Ryder added. “I don’t regret opening up about what I went through [with depression], because, it sounds really cliché, but I have had women come up to me and say, ‘It meant so much to me.’ It means so much when you realize that someone was having a really hard time and feeling shame and was trying to hide this whole thing … And even the whole, like, sensitive, fragile thing. I do have those qualities, and I just don’t think there’s anything wrong with them. There were times when I let it feel too overwhelming and almost, like, shamed, but I had to just get over that.”

As usual, Ryder is giving us so much truth — and this time it’s even better because she’s speaking out against an attitude that wrongly depicts vulnerability in a woman as an affliction that needs to be urgently fixed.
