Mental health is one of the young royals’ primary focuses within their charity work.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry launched their Heads Together campaign in 2017 to tackle stigma and to encourage people to speak about their own mental health.

Historian Kate Williams says the campaign “broke taboos” and allowed William and Harry to be more open and talk about their personal experiences.

Speaking on Yahoo UK’s The Royal Box, she added: “But also we heard the royals talk about what they had suffered, and as you say they live in a palace, it’s a gilded cage, they want for nothing, but still they made it clear that they too can suffer a lot of mental pain.

“And when you say they want to nothing, we’re talking about materialism there, what they want is a mother, and that’s something that was taken away.”

Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car accident in Paris on 31 August 1997 – when William and Harry were aged just 15 and 12.

CNN royal contributor Victoria Arbiter says: “They would trade it all to have her back.”

When the campaign launched, Harry also opened up about his own struggles with grief on Bryony Gordon’s podcast ‘Mad World.’

Mental health continues to be a big focus for the Cambridges and the Sussexes, with Kate set to attend The Royal Foundation’s ‘Mental Health in Education’ conference on Wednesday.

William also recently revealed that no celebrities were willing to back the Heads Together campaign until shortly before it launched.

During a trip to Bristol at the beginning of February, Prince Harry also cleared the room to speak to a young boy who had lost a parent and discussed his experience with grief.
