By now, you might have had an experience or two with shapewear. For some, it’s a dream. For others, it can be somewhat of a nightmare. Octavia Spencer got real about shapewear at the Toronto International Film Festival, and mentioned how she thinks it’s just a big waste of time.

Spencer has attended her fair share of red carpet events to know for sure. While she’s been acting since the ’90s, her big break came in 2011 for the movie The Help. Since then, she’s shown up in movies like Insurgent and Hidden Figures and had a recurring role in the television series Mom.

So, when she said that her biggest style disaster included shapewear, we had to listen up.

“Ladies, it’s not worth it,” she said at the festival. “We don’t even [need to] say what underwear it is. Just don’t wear too much of it.”

So, why is she changing her tune? Well, in Spencer’s mind, the most important way to dress is for comfort. And she also believes that with more comfort, women often gain a lot more confidence. We get that.

“I think women are sexy when they are confident. I think trying to wear nine-inch heels and tights trussed up like a Thanksgiving turkey, those days are gone [for me],” she said.

Spencer made sure to practice what she preached — her outfits that she put together for the festival events were colorful, flowy, and absolutely perfect. And that’s probably why she was all smiles.

We love her outlook, and might just take her advice next time we’re going to a special event.
