Why Marvel’s Kevin Feige isn’t sure about bringing Netflix characters into Avengers: Infinity War

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has explained why he’s hesitant to bring the small screen Marvel heroes of Netflix into the fray in ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’

As impressive as the big screen undertaking of the MCU has proven to be, that story world has expanded even further on the small screen with ABC shows ‘Agents of SHIELD’ and the sadly cancelled ‘Agent Carter.’

However, Marvel has won their greatest small screen plaudits – and created their most mature live-action work to date – with the Netflix shows ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Luke Cage,’ which will soon be followed by ‘Iron Fist’ and ‘The Punisher,’ all building toward crossover series ‘The Defenders.’

The upcoming third ‘Avengers’ movie has long been promised to be the biggest MCU movie yet, incorporating more or less all Marvel’s existing big screen heroes: Doctor Strange and the Guardians of the Galaxy are already confirmed to appear alongside all the existing Avengers, in the long-awaited battle against the cosmic tyrant Thanos.

Naturally, there have long been questions asked about whether the future Defenders will also join the fight – and, quizzed on the matter by Collider, Feige is still reticent to give a definitive yes or no answer, though he does give reasons for his uncertainty.

“I think it’s extremely impressive what Netflix has done and it will be the same answer I always give, which is, ‘It all depends on timing.’ It all depends on how to do it because I don’t think what anybody wants to do is have such important characters show up for one second.

“Black Panther and Spider-Man to me are the high bar in ‘Civil War’ of how you can bring in new characters into something. Vision and Ultron, Wanda and Pietro in Ultron. And it takes a lot of screentime, and it takes a lot of work.

“’Infinity War’ has a lot of people in it already. So it just depends on how we could figure it out.”

Nor are these the only Marvel characters who remain unconfirmed for ‘Infinity War:’ we still don’t know for sure if Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will reunite with the Avengers after his first appearance in ‘Captain America: Civil War.’

Nor do we know whether or not Brie Larson will make a pre-‘Captain Marvel’ appearance as Carol Danvers; by no means a sure thing, as the ‘Captain Marvel’ movie – which isn’t due until 2019, the year after ‘Infinity War’ - has been described as an origin story, which means the character most likely won’t have her powers beforehand.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is scheduled to hit UK cinemas screens on 27 April 2018; but before that, the latest Marvel movie ‘Doctor Strange’ opens this coming Tuesday, 25 October.
