Whoopi Goldberg Brings Her Sister Act to 'Broad City'

Broad City has had plenty of cameos over its two-plus seasons, and the celebrity guest appearance in Wednesday night’s episode may have been the best yet.

Whoopi Goldberg got back in the habit for the latest episode of Comedy Central sitcom, singing and dancing as Sister Mary Clarence (a.k.a. Deloris Van Cartier) during a delightful musical sequence inspired by the “Joyful Joyful” routine from Sister Act 2. It’s a slight spoiler for fans of Broad City who haven’t seen the episode, but here’s the setup: Ilana (played by series co-creator Ilana Glazer) finally got canned from her job at sales company Deals Deals Deals (she’s terrible at making deals!), and her sad-sack officemate Nicole is so happy, she ascends into a fantasy that involves a gospel choir celebration, with a wimple-wearing Whoopi in the lead.

Getting the EGOT winner to guest star — in costume — was a dream come true for the ladies of Broad City, as co-creator and co-star Abbi Jacobson indicated earlier this week when she posted a photo of Goldberg holding up a Broad City poster on her Instagram account. “This is a completely insane image that my 12-year-old-self would never ever believe,” Jacobson wrote in the caption.

Goldberg is a big get, but she may soon be overshadowed by an even bigger name cameo: Hillary Clinton, who filmed scenes with Glazer and Jacobson in December.
