A major baker is expanding its mission to upgrade Singapore’s coffee and toast breakfast with a new chain debuting Friday.
That’s when BreadTalk will open its first Butter Bean outlet at the Funan shopping mall. Butter Bean will serve inch-thick toast layered with sweet or savory toppings including chicken floss and Milo chocolate powder. It will also serve traditional Singaporean coffee spiked with additional ingredients such as brown sugar, whipped cream, or even salted cream foam.
Whether the result is a creative spin on traditional foods or an abomination, you can judge. But general manager Vincent Lim thinks the new format could lure the young ones.
“We aim to present traditional Nanyang Coffee in an engaging manner that appeals to the younger generation’s evolving lifestyle. Our outlets are also designed as a social space centred on good vibes, conversations and connection,” he said in a statement.
Another branch is to follow in September at the VivoCity shopping mall.
Butter Bean’s coffee is made with a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans that are coated with caramelized sugar before being roasted. Beverages on offer include the G.M. Kopi BBliss, which combines gula melaka or palm sugar, fresh mlk, and whipped cream. There is also the BBrulee Kopi Latte, made with salted cream foam and torched sprinkles of sugar.
Of course, it would not be a proper Nanyang coffee experience without some toast. Like BreadTalk, the thick toasts here are freshly baked and go well with either half-boiled or Hanjuku-style eggs.
Sandwiches come with proteins including battered fried fish, crispy fried chicken, and ham and cheese are also on offer for those seeking big breakfasts. Lunch or dinner offerings include chicken curry and prawn noodles.
The 45-seater Funan outlet will be smaller than that coming to VivoCity, which will house 84 seats and an outdoor patio.
