Where Are These One-Hit-Wonder Grammy Winners Now?

Every now and again a musical artist comes around who releases a song that manages to break into mainstream popular culture and become a defining part of their identity, bestowing upon them the title of a "one-hit-wonder." Here are 20 singers and bands who were able to turn their head-bopping hits into Grammy gold.

In 2002, jazz artist Nora Jones launched her solo career with the release of Come Away with Me. The album produced the hit single "Don't Know Why" and earned Jones five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Best New Artist.

Since her highly acclaimed debut, Jones has been pumping out records, but none managed to match the success of her debut effort. In 2007, the singer/songwriter made her acting debut in My Blueberry Nights. Her latest studio album, Begin Again, was released in 2019.

The Welsh singer, whose vocals match that of Adele infused with Amy Winehouse, came into worldwide recognition with her 2008 single "Mercy," off of her debut album Rockferry. The record landed Duffy a Grammy trophy for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2009.

Following the massive success of her debut album, Duffy released her second effort Endlessly in 2010. In 2011, the Welsh artist announced that she was taking a hiatus from singing. Since then, she has appeared in a few acting roles. The singer recently shared on her verified Instagram page a photo with the caption "#2020," leading many fans to speculate her return to music.

Hornsby, along with David Mansfield, George Marinelli, Joe Puerta, and John Molo, were the performers that made up Bruce Hornsby and The Range. The band launched their career in the mid '80s and won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1987, following their hit single "The Way It Is" in 1986.

Hornsby has been a part of several bands since having been awarded his initial Grammy gold. He toured as part of the Grateful Dead for a few years in the early '90s, and currently records and plays most shows solo or as part of The Bruce Hornsby Trio. The performer also recently produced new music for Spike Lee's Blackkklansman (2018).

Fresh off of her self-titled solo debut album in 1987, the Chicago native topped the charts with her track "Looking for a New Love." The former Soul Train performer won the 1988 Grammy for Best New Artist.

Since her Grammy breakthrough, Watley has produced seven studio albums, with her last being in 2006. She was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2008 and has since kept a relatively low profile.

Fans of late '90s music probably remember Colvin's Grammy Award-winning track "Sunny Came Home," for which the South Dakota native was awarded statues for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The tune came off her fourth studio album, A Few Small Repairs, in 1997.

Since pulling double duty at the Grammy's, Colvin hasn't slowed down much. The pop-folk singer has released over a dozen albums, with her most recent being an acoustic version of her 1989 debut album Steady On in 2019.

Skyrocketing to success with her debut album On How Life Is, the R&B singer went multi-platinum with the single “I Try” and took home the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001.

Gray went on to record several follow-up albums, none managing to match the success of her breakout debut. She also appeared in several films and television shows as herself, including Spider-Man, Scary Movie 3, and Fuller House. Today, she continues to make music and perform on tour.

In 1993, the rapper’s song “Baby Got Back” went double platinum and won him a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.

The Seattle native went on to release three more albums following his “Baby Got Back” success. He now hosts a Seattle morning radio show on Hot 103.7FM and lends his voice to several animated series, often playing himself.

The answer to the age-old question “Who Let the Dogs Out?” may never be known, but the hit song of the same name won the Bahamian group a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2000.

While the band has never been able to match the success of their hit heard around the world, they have embraced the song's status and recorded remixes as recent as 2018. Their latest studio album dropped in 2015.

The English singer/songwriter blasted into the mainstream with her hit “Rehab” from the album Back to Black. The record and single earned Winehouse five Grammy Awards in 2008, including Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year — making the “Rehab” singer the first British Woman to achieve such honors.

Winehouse tragically passed away in 2011 from alcohol poisoning. The following year, her parents accepted a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo with Tony Bennett on her behalf. Although cut short, her brief music portfolio cemented her status as a music icon.

Fans of the hit television show Dawson’s Creek will remember Cole’s breakout song “I Don’t Want to Wait,” which won the then 30-year-old a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1998.

Cole went on to become a mother shortly after winning the Grammy. The singer/songwriter recently dropped her ninth studio album, Revolution, in 2019.

McFerrin’s hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” amassed a large global fan base in 1988 and won the jazz singer Grammys for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1989.

The jazz singer went on to have a very lengthy career, earning several more Grammy awards over the years. However, he was unable to duplicate the success of his aforementioned hit. McFerrin was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award during the A Cappella Music Awards in May 2018.

“Bring Me to Life” brought the band two golden Grammy statues for Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance in 2004.

The goth-rock band has recorded only four albums in their nearly 20-year career, with their most recent including a reworked cover of their hit song. Members of the group have entered and exited the picture. However, they continue to tour around the world to this day.

The eponymous debut album from Cohn supplied the platinum-selling hit, “Walking in Memphis,” which rewarded Cohn with a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1992.

In 2005, Cohn was shot in the head but miraculously lived to tell the tale. The folk-singer has released a total of nine albums, with the most recent landing in August 2019.

A defining disco-era hit, “Boogie Oogie Oogie” helped the singers of A Taste of Honey bring home the Grammy for Best New Artist in 1979.

The group’s final album together was “One Taste of Honey” in 1984. Janice Marie Johnson and Hazel Payne left the group before the last album to pursue solo singing and acting careers, respectively. Perry Kibble passed away of heart failure in 1999 and Suzanne Thomas in 2015. Donald Johnson continues on the band’s legacy and still performs to this day.

The American soul duo’s hit song “Crazy” nabbed the Grammy for Best Record in 2007.

In 2010, singer CeeLo Green split off from producer Danger Mouse to record his own music, including the hit “Forget You.” The duo formerly known as Gnarls Barkley hasn’t released an album since 2008, and CeeLo transitioned to coaching contestants on The Voice but left the show in 2018.

The indie pop band, most known for “We Are Young,” brought home Grammy gold for Best New Artist and Song of the Year in 2013.

In 2015 the band announced via Facebook that they were taking a brief hiatus. Nate Ruess released a solo album in June 2015, while Jack Antonoff has gone on to write songs for Lana Del Rey, Troye Sivan, and Pink, among others.

American rocker Jakob Dylan and guitarist Tobi Miller charted the billboards in 1998 with “One Headlight,” which earned them Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Performance by a Duo or Group.

Following a few more records, the band took a brief hiatus in the mid-millennium while Dylan released a couple of solo albums. The rockers reunited for the album “Glad All Over” in 2012, and have toured on and off in more recent years.

The English funk band was awarded Best Performance by a Duo or Group in 1997 for their hit song “Virtual Insanity,” which features a memorable and artistic music video where the walls and floors move freely.

Like many bands that came before them, members of the group have come and gone through its 25-year history. Today, lead singer Jay Kay still performs with several of the original band members —crazy headwear still included.

Not only was the song “Afternoon Delight” awarded Billboard’s 20th “sexiest song of all time,” but it also brought its performers Grammy awards for Best Arrangement for Voices and Best New Artist in 1977.

The band released their final album, a holiday record, in November of 1980. The four members, Bill Danoff, Taffy Danoff, Jon Carroll, and Margot Chapman, went their separate ways in 1981 to pursue personal and professional endeavors. They reunited in 1998 for a select number of concerts, but haven't performed since.

For the SoCal native, it was a true “Gangsta’s Paradise” when the rapper brought home a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance in 1995.

Coolio went on to record nine follow-up records and also turned his focus towards acting. He has appeared in several hit projects including, Judgement Day, Dracula 3000, Batman & Robin, and Charmed.
