By now you’ve probably seen the first images from ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, Marvel’s upcoming space adventure starring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder and Mark Ruffalo as his fellow Avenger The Hulk.

The colourful first look at what is sure to be a very different kind of ‘Thor’ movie has now been accompanied by the first plot details, which explains a few things, including Thor’s new hair-do.

Entertainment Weekly, as part of their latest issue’s cover star, revealed the details.

“When we last saw Thor, he was flying off to figure out who was manipulating the Avengers at the end of ‘Age of Ultron’,” they write. “Eventually, he hears rumblings of trouble in Asgard: His evil brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), has been impersonating their missing father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins).

“Loki’s rather lax governing leads to the reemergence of an imprisoned Hela (Cate Blanchett). Thor’s initial encounter with Hela gets him blasted to Sakaar, a barbaric planet ruled by the charming but nefarious Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum).

“Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), a tough, hard-drinking warrior hiding out on Sakaar brings the god to the Grandmaster… Thor is then forced into becoming a gladiator, which leads to his haircut and the loss of his trusty hammer.”

So Thor is sent to a cursed corner of the galaxy after attempting to clear up his brother Loki’s mess, where he meets the big green guy, who as EW explains is Sakaar’s most successful gladiator.

“Once Thor and Hulk unite, Ragnarok becomes a sort of road-trip film, with director Taika Waititi drawing inspiration from movies like ’48 HRS’, ‘Withnail and I’, and even ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’.”

The film’s director Taika Waititi (‘What We Do In The Shadows’, ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’) also discussed his star’s comedic chops. Hemsworth’s talent for comedy is underratted, with his chops used sparingly to date.

It’s his funnier moments that fans remember most fondly however, like the diner scene in 2011’s original ‘Thor’ and when he hangs Mjolnir up on a coat hook.

“He’s so good and underutilised in that department,” Waititi says. “He’s legitimately one of the funniest things in this film.”

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ is set for release on 27 October 2017.
