Weekend guide (7-9 September): STGCC, Japan Summer Festival, escape room challenge

Here is Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore’s list of some of the top activities this weekend. These include a celebration of pop culture, a Japanese sports and cultural event, and an escape room challenge.

Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC)

The largest pop culture convention in Singapore, this year’s Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) will feature unique toys, exciting games and cosplay. A slew of limited-edition collectible toys from pop culture brands such as Hot Toys and tokidoki will be unveiled, including the exclusive “tokidoki x Hello Kitty Series 2” and the one-of-a-kind Spider-Man figure made specially to commemorate Marvel Studio’s 10th anniversary.

Visitors can look forward to playing table-top and trading card games, as well as assembling one’s own geek superhero cape. Numerous guests will be at the convention, including Marvel comic artist David Finch, tokidoki toy designer Simone Legno, American cosplayer Olivia Mears, voice actor Ueda Kana, and “Kawaii x Fun x Idol Unit!” group chuLa.

Japan Summer Festival

Billed as the biggest showcase of Japanese food, culture and fun-play entertainment, the festival will feature more than 100 Japanese food and drinks, games and merchandise booths, as well as 25 stage performances by 24 groups and organisations from Japan and Singapore.

There will be three main game zones: The Pokémon Carnival, the Sports Hub Community Play Day – Fun on Wheels!, and the Japanese Association’s Game Corner. Games include “Let’s Battle Pikachu”, “Hanetsuki”, which is a game similar to badminton but with the exception of a net, ’90’s car racing video game “Daytona”, as well as giant versions of “Snakes & Ladders”, “Pick-Up Sticks” and “Twister”.

Visitors can take part in J-Party Fitness mass workouts, comprising popular routines such as Zumba, Salsation and Kardioblast, conducted by Japanese instructors. Visitors can also try their hand at tennis with guidance from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) crew.

Warner TV Escape Room Challenge

Comprising three stages, this escape room challenge tests participants’ knowledge of Warner TV shows The Big Bang Theory, Gotham and Lethal Weapon. As the stages progress, the level of difficulty increases. Challenges include helping fictional TV character Sheldon Cooper locate his missing comic books, deactivating a bomb before it explodes, and escaping Gotham City Police Department’s jail cells. Participants can also test their archery skills against fictional superhero Arrow and attempt to complete a Super Fan Puzzle within a minute.

X Edition 2018 – Asia’s Largest Photography Hotel Art Fair

Bringing together the world’s leading art galleries and international photo artists, this art fair will showcase the vibrant culture and diversity of visual arts globally. Visitors can learn about photo art techniques, new technologies and processes in photography through a special speaker series. Visitors can look forward to a talk on the topic of “Pigment Based Carbon Print” presented by New York-based fine-art photographer Stephen Schaub on Saturday. He will be presenting his visual art pieces for the first time in Asia through this art fair.

bites & vibes

This gourmet block party will be featuring pop-up food stalls and bars, fitness activities, and live music. Visitors can enjoy cold brews and cocktails, as well as enjoy food from popular restaurants such as Park Bench Deli, Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Alati, and Vatos Urban Tacos. Visitors can also take part in f45 training and yoga sessions. Local musicians – Sam Rui, DJ Sivanesh Pillai, Sobs and Maricelle – and international acts – DJ Mack Hampson, Bari Rumbles Brass and DJ Toppings – will be performing.

Singapore Female Festival

Through the theme “Create, Nurture and Transform”, this festival aims to bring awareness to the women of today by recognising the journey of a woman through the different stages of her life, from 18 to 50 years old. Talks and workshops, spanning various topics, will be held at the festival. Topics include beauty and wellness, gifts and jewellery, smart living and smart applications, health and fitness, and financial wellbeing. Other highlights include a bridal fashion runway and a festival village. The festival welcomes women from all walks of life, including mothers-to-be, singles, singles, brides-to-be, and students.

White Cane Community Day

Celebrating the successes of people with visual impairment, this event invites visitors to take part in several experiential activities. These include a simulation of the daily life of a visually-impaired person, blindfolded walks, free eye check-ups, carnival-style games, and a bouncy castle. Visitors can also watch white cane and guide dog demonstrations.

The SMASH HITS Concert – Tiffany & Debbie Gibson

In what will be their first-ever concert in Asia, pop idols Tiffany and Debbie Gibson will be performing together for one-night-only in Singapore. Both achieved great music success in the ’80’s and early ’90’s, with Tiffany having reached top spot on the US Pop Singles Charts several times with songs such as I Think We’re Alone Now and Could’ve Been, and Debbie having cracked multiple pop charts in the US with songs such as Only In My Dreams and Foolish Beat. The pop icons have each released nine albums to date. Fans can meet either one of them after the concert by purchasing a VIP ticket package.
