Weekend guide (31 Aug-2 Sept): Marvel-themed sand festival, Beerfest Asia, movie marathon

Here is Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore’s list of some of the top activities this weekend. These include a sand festival dedicated to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a beer festival celebrating its 10th anniversary, and a movie marathon for lovebirds.

Sentosa Sandsation: Marvel Edition

The biggest sand festival in South-east Asia, this event will feature 15 larger-than-life sand sculptures of popular Marvel superheroes such as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk. Visitors can look forward to interactive activities including Hulk Smash – in which participants can compare their strength with Marvel superheroes – and Hero Action Centre, where participants can discover how similar they are to Marvel superheroes.

There will also be sand-sculpting workshops for children aged five and above, movie screenings by the beach and special offerings at Madame Tussauds Singapore’s Marvel 4D Experience.

Science Buskers Festival

Bringing together the love for science and the art of performance for a unique entertaining experience, this festival features over 50 busking groups performing fascinating experiments such as recreating Harry Potter spells, snow making and demonstrating the amazing properties of non-Newtonian fluid. The buskers range from eight-year-olds to polytechnic students. Visitors can also look forward to the first-ever bilingual science show by British science presenter Kate Mulcahy.

Beerfest Asia

This year’s edition of the festival will feature a wide range of local and international beers with over 600 varieties available, some of which will be making their Singapore debut at the festival.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the festival’s limited-edition “Birthday Beers” – created by several breweries in the region – will be available for visitors. Highlights include beer workshop sessions, local and international food, a family carnival, music performances and stand-up comedy acts.

When: 30 August – 2 September, 6pm to 12am (Thursday), 4pm to 12am (Friday), 3pm to 12am (Saturday), 2pm to 11pm (Sunday)

10 Grand Movie Marathon

An event created specially for lovebirds, couples can enjoy a buffet dinner by Food Capital while watching four films back-to-back. Films to be screened are Me Before You, Bride Wars, Ready Player One and Isles of Dogs. Couples can also visit booths set up by vendors providing bridal services, decorations and photography, among others. Participants also stand a chance to win a wedding banquet package worth $10,000.

Vision Fest

Themed “Small Act, Big Impact”, this annual World Vision event highlights the needs of children and communities living in extreme poverty. Visitors can find out how they can make long-lasting impact in vulnerable communities through a volunteer sharing session. Other highlights include an interactive song and dance performance, a family workshop, an art exhibition, and a screening of the film Living On One Dollar.

Ballet Under The Stars

Enjoy neo-classical ballet works in the 23rd edition of this celebrated outdoor event. Visitors can dine while they enjoy the performances, some of which are dedicated to masterpieces by renowned ballet choreographer Choo-San Goh. Performances include Francois Klaus’ Midnight Waltzes, George Balanchine’s The Four Temperaments, and Edwaard Liang’s 13th Heaven.
