Weekend guide (22-24 September): Mid-Autumn@Gardens by the Bay, GREAT Food Festival

This weekend marks the beginning of the Mid-Autumn@Gardens by the Bay lantern displays as well as the largest ever gourmet and lifestyle festival in Singapore, the GREAT Food Festival. For music lovers, Japanese groups Do As Infinity and The Gospellers are performing in Singapore.

1. Do As Infinity @ Capitol Theatre

Join Japanese pop and rock band Do As Infinity as they celebrate their 17th anniversary with their first concert in Singapore. Concert-goers can look forward to songs such as InuYasha’s ending theme song ”Fukai Mori” and Fairy Tail’s opening theme song ”Mysterious Magic”, among other songs from the Oricon chart-topping duo.

2. The Gospellers Live in Singapore 2017

The Gospellers, a five-man vocal group from Japan, will be performing in Singapore for the first time. Formed in 1991 when the members were part of Waseda University’s a cappella club, Street Corner Symphony, the group debuted with the single “Promise” in 1994 and have been performing live on concert tours every year since. 3. Mid-Autumn @ Gardens by the Bay

Get an early start for the Mid-Autumn Festival at Gardens by the Bay as it celebrates with lantern sets signifying bountiful harvests and good fortune, nightly cultural performances, a food street with Asian delights, and craft booths featuring activities like lantern decorating, umbrella painting and Chinese knotting.

When: 22 September to 8 October 2017, 6pm to 11pm

4. The GREAT Food Festival

Touted as the single biggest gourmet and lifestyle festival in Singapore, the first-time collaboration between Resorts World Sentosa and Savour will feature Michelin-starred chefs and notable gourmand personalities from all over the world, all within a space the size of the Padang. 5. The Color Run Night

If you’re a night owl who likes running, The 5km Color Run Night might just be for you. Thousands of participants, or Color Runners, will be doused from head to toe in neon powder after each kilometre, all while wearing blacklight headlamps which will illuminate the colours.

6. Mangroves cum Coastal Clean-up at Ubin

Join The Nature Society as they aim to help clean up the offshore island of Pulau Ubin, removing abandoned drift nets and marine debris along the coastline. You’ll be helping to prepare the selected sites for scientific surveys and Restore Ubin Mangrove works as well as ensuring that Singapore’s wildlife have the proper environment to thrive in.

7. Local Motion Music Festival

Local chicken chain 4FINGERS is teaming up with DJ duo EATMEPOPTART for this outdoor music festival, which will feature some of the best local music talents like Disco Hue, Jasmine Sokko, Bakers In Space, Lost Weekend, TheBryanState (of The Summer State and EMONIGHTSG), JoJo and, of course, EATMEPOPTART.

8. Asia Fighting Championship 2017

For the first time in Singapore, meet the top Muay Thai champion fighters from Korea, Macau, Malaysia and other countries, who will be making their first appearance and fight against Singapore’s very own. There’s also a “Celebrity Fight-off” between former Singapore Idol contestant Sylvester Sim against “superstar” Steven Lim.

9. Watercolour Pencils Workshop by Faber-Castell

Ever wanted to learn how to use watercolour pencils but never found the time? This workshop might just be your thing. Conducted by Singaporean artist Tiffany Yao, this workshop will teach students how to use colour pencils both dry and wet, mix and blend colours, and draw basic shapes, all in the comfort of redpan Cafe.

10. Soul Vistas: An Introspective Journey through our City

Maya Gallery and The Fullerton Hotel present “Soul Vistas: An Introspective Journey through our City”, a duo exhibition by prominent Singaporean Malay artists Idris Ali and Jeffrey Wandly, who explore Singapore’s streets, landscapes and landmarks in watercolour, and ink and acrylic, to capture the essence and soul of the Lion City.

11. Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, a solo exhibition by Adeel uz Zafar

Catch the opening of Pakistani artist Adeel uz Zafar’s take on Dante’s 14th century Divine Comedy, which details the journey of a soul in the afterlife. The works bear witness to new developments in uz Zafar’s self-developed technique of etching on vinyl with the use of different tools.

12. Eva, Kopi and Matcha 2.0 Book launch and signing

Local artist Evangeline Neo’s latest comic book continues the adventures of her experiences with cultural differences. Together with Kopi the dog and Matcha the cat, observe the hilarious anecdotes of life abroad and comparisons between Singapore and places such as the United States, Vietnam, Indonesia and, of course, Japan.

13. The Millennials’ Voices

The Millennials’ Voices exhibition at Di Legno Gallery hopes to offer an insight into the world of millennials today. The group show by 13 Filipino artists is part of ART TREK 2017, in collaboration with the Embassy of Republic of Philippines.

14. The First Hippo on the Moon: Live on Stage in Singapore

Adapted for the stage from UK author David Walliam’s children’s book, the performance by acclaimed award-winning theatre company Les Petits features a fantastical adventure featuring puppetry, music, mayhem and a giant space race to the moon between two hippos.
