Weekend guide (16-18 June): Downton Abbey exhibition, Bii With You

It’s going to be a star-studded weekend ahead, as celebrities from all fields arrive in Singapore. From the hit TV series Downton Abbey to UFC stars Holly Holm and Bethe Correia, there’s something for everyone to look forward to.

1. Downton Abbey: The Exhibition
You don’t need to travel back in time to step into early-1900s England, because an exhibition based on the hit TV series Downton Abbey is coming to Singapore. The exhibition allows visitors to peer into Lady Mary’s bedroom and the Abbey’s Great Hall, as well as learn about the fashion, technologies and cultural shifts before and after the first World War. Visitors can also expect authentic sets and real costumes from the show.

2. UFC Fight Night Singapore
Fans of MMA have a reason to look forward to this weekend, as UFC stars Holly Holm and Bethe Correia are coming to town. Watch the ceremonial weigh-in of all UFC fight card athletes on 16 June at 7pm, and witness the fighters compete in one of the world’s most intimidating arenas, the Octagon.

3. Asia Global Bellydance 2017
One of the oldest forms of dancing, bellydancing has roots in ancient cultures spanning India to the Middle East. The annual Asia Global Bellydance Competition is part of the Singapore Street Festival, during which allows bellydancers in Singapore can showcase their dance moves and compete for the top prize of up to $3,000.

4. D’J Party
D’J Party – a community of Japanese Music enthusiasts – is holding a party this weekend to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Visitors can expect over 30 acts, consisting of singing, dancing and band performances.

5. Nathan Sykes’ A Rooftop Affair
English singer-songwriter Nathan Sykes is coming to Singapore for the first time, and fans can get up close and personal with him at Serangoon Garden’s unique rooftop concert experience at myVillage.

6. Opera in the Park
The 10th season of The Singapore’s Lyric Opera’s outreach programme is bringing the opera experience to a wider audience and removing formal barriers of traditional opera settings. Opera in the Park invites audiences to have a picnic with their friends and family while soaking up the music at the Botanic Gardens. Visitors can expect a selection of classical favourites such as Rossini’s La Gazzetta, Mozart’s Le Nozza di Figaro and Puccini’s Gianni Schinni.

7. Tuas West Extension Open House
Be one of the first to preview the new Tuas West Extension (TWE) at the TWE Open House happening this Friday. All four stations of the extension will be open to the public from 12pm to 8pm, and visitors can ride the trains along the TWE for free as well as participate in games and activities at the Open House.

8. POPSuey
For one night only, a pop-up bar concept by Chopsuey’s Cafe, POPSuey will see a collision of East and West, where Asian-inspired drinks, small plates and dim sum take center stage. Visitors should look for a red door to enter, and look forward to a soulful house soundtrack helmed by local DJ Sivanesh.

9. Child’s Play! Lunchtime Concerts for Children 0+
You and your child can play along with musicians at this concert, where children are encouraged to be themselves, groove or dance along to the music. Elixir Quartet, a four-woman ensemble, will be presenting the most popular traditional Korean folk songs and Western classical pieces.

10. ArtScience on Screen: Anime Season – Castle in the Sky
In conjunction with Children’s Season Singapore, ArtScience on Screen presents the award-winning animated classic from the iconic Studio Ghibli. Castle in the Sky follows the adventures of young orphans Sheeta and Puza, who make a risky escape from military agents and pirates in search of a legendary floating castle.

11. ADAC Music Concert 2017
The Anti-Drug Abuse Campaign (ADAC) is putting up a concert this Friday, where concert-goers will be treated to tracks from some of Singapore’s best performers such as Taufik Batisah, The Sam Willows, Inch Chua, Scarlet Avenue and TheLionCityBoy.

12. Curatorial Roundtable: Yayoi Kusama
Find out why the work of esteemed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is so relevant today, and the reason for the popularity of her art, at this curatorial roundtable. The dialogue will also investigate the wider implications of these issues within today’s culture.

13. Bii With You LIVE in Singapore 2017
Korean-Taiwanese star Bii returns to Singaproe this weekend with the Bii With You Live in Singapore 2017 concert. The two-hour concert is the singer’s first and only music showcase this year. Fans can look forward to a night of good music and up-close-and-personal interactions with Bii.

14. Silent Disco Asia 1st Birthday
The biggest ever Silent Disco event in Singapore will be taking place this weekend as Silent Disco Asia celebrates its first anniversary. Visitors can expect a range of DJs who have previously graced the decks of other Silent Disco Asia parties.
