Weekend guide (16-18 February): Chinese New Year festivities galore

Festive fun arrives this Chinese New Year weekend as everyone gets ready to welcome the Year of the Dog, with annual favourite River Hongbao and Open House programmes at the Istana and Singapore Art Museum. For those looking for something different, nightclub AVRY is hosting music producer Clinton Sparks.

Welcome the Year of the Dog with an 11-day festival jointly organised by Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, Singapore Press Holdings, Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Singapore Tourism Board and People’s Association.

This year’s edition includes fireworks, local and international performances, street food and interactive fringe activities. A fun-filled carnival for the whole family to enjoy, there will also be a “parade dance” for the audience to join in, along with a cultural spectacular.

Spring Surprise at Gardens By the Bay

Gardens by the Bay starts the Lunar New Year celebrations with a whole line-up of festive performances and fun for the family. There will be ultraviolet (UV) light performances with the UV Lotus Dragon and UV Northern Lions making their very first appearance here in Singapore. You can try out some handicraft or hang out with the God of Fortune at the Flower Dome. At the Supertree Grove, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra will be performing “Music Oasis: Spring Romance at the Gardens”.

Istana Nature Guided Walk

Check out the Nature Guided Walk during the Istana Chinese New Year Open House. A collaboration between the President’s Office and the National Parks Board (NParks), visitors get to view the Istana’s flora, fauna and biodiversity. The guided walk starts from 10am to 4pm, and is conducted hourly. Signs on the Istana grounds will tell you where you can register for the guided walk.

Chinese New Year Open House at SAM

If you are in the mood for a more artsy Chinese New Year, head down to the Singapore Art Museum this weekend where you can enjoy the #cineramaSG artworks while ushering in the year of the Dog.

Visitors get to enjoy a festive lion dance performance, family-friendly art and craft activities, and Chinese calligraphy demonstrations by calligraphy enthusiast Malik Mazlan.

AVRY Presents Clinton Sparks

If you are in the mood for partying, Clinton Sparks, the hit producer who has worked with world-famous musicians like Lady Gaga, Akon, and Pitbull, will be playing at the nightclub AVRY. He will be playing an open format set, so expect action on the dance floor!
