Weekend guide (1-3 September): Silver Arts 2017, Sentosa Sandsational Fun

There’s much to rejoice about this weekend! It’s finally a long weekend and also the start of the September holidays for students. But don’t even think of repaying that sleep debt just yet – there’s such a long list of lifestyle events from concerts to festivals to choose from that you’re bound to what to get up and get going instead.

1. Silver Arts 2017

The Silver Arts festival will offer a slew of activities such as film screenings, concerts, theatre performances, workshops, talks and exhibitions. The organisers have put together a total of 38 programmes happening across 20 venues and targeting 42,000 attendees. You can read more about the Silver Arts festival here.

2. Sandsational Fun

Other than offering free entry to the island for a week, Sentosa will be holding Southeast Asia’s biggest sand festival! The sand art exhibition spreads over 2,400 square metres and has three zones, each with a different experience including quirky takes on various aspects of everyday Singapore life.

3. Star Wars Festival

The Force will be strong at the launch of Star Wars: Experience the Force Singapore festival, in line with the celebration of Star Wars Force Friday II. There will be various exciting pop-up experiences and fan-based activities, including the first-ever installation of the Millennium Falcon.

4. in::music

in::music is a local concert featuring Singaporean singer-songwriter Ng Meiting and Mandarin originals band NEKO Highway, in which they will be performing their own songs. Join them on their whimsical journey as they tell love stories and the weird and quirky side of their everyday lives.

5. Michael Learns To Rock Asia Tour

You can’t afford to be 25 minutes too late for MLTR’s Asia tour! Denmark’s Biggest Pop Export will be performing in Singapore this weekend and you can expect to groove in to popular tunes such as ‘Paint My Love’, ‘The Actor’, and ‘Sleeping Child’. MLTR has sold more than 11 million physical albums since their debut.

6. MEW Live in Singapore

The Danish alternative rock band will be returning to Singapore for their most intimate and personal show yet. Formed in 1995, they had a profound impact on the Danish indie scene, even winning “Album of the Year” and “Band of the Year” at the 2003 Danish Music Critics Award Show.

7. Derrick “Back to 19” Live

Following two sell-out solo concert shows last year, Derrick Hoh returns with a special “Back to 19” birthday live where his fans can vote for the songs they want to hear live over at his official Facebook page. Derrick will also be debuting his two new songs “My Turn to Love” and “Shine On” during the event too.

8. Kilo Lounge presents Mr Has (Rawjak)

Get ready for a crazy night as Mr Has returns to Kilo Lounge for another six-hour-non-stop musical journey delivering the freshest cuts of four-to-the-floor beats. Mr Has is one of the key figures in Singapore’s music scene, and his work has introduced underground & cutting-edge club sounds into the island’s nightlife.

9. Yayoi Kusama Closing – The Final Dot

All good things must come to an end. Having welcomed the Yayoi Kusama exhibition in June, it’s now time for it to go. With this week being the final weekend, there will be a special two-hour exhibition viewing followed by a silent disco party from 10pm. Yayoi Kusama will open her own museum in Tokyo in October.

10. Deepavali light-up ceremony

Deepavali might be more than a month away but celebrations in Singapore will have a magnificent kick-off this weekend. Visitors can immerse themselves in the festivities and a musical potpourri of cultural performances by local and international artistes. The event will also be filled with rhythmic music, dance and beautiful street floats.

11. SSO Concerts for Children: Peter and the Wolf

Kids can delight with the popular orchestral tale of Peter and the Wolf, as “told” by the theatrics and antics of acclaimed mime artists from Magic Circle Mime! Come experience the story as it unfolds ‘live’ on stage and you can outwit the ‘fearsome wolf’ that threatens the orchestra and audience!

12. OCBC Cycle Speedway Corporate Championship

The OCBC Cycle Speedway Corporate Championship serves as a new platform for companies to race against one another over 20 laps. The first race will happen this weekend, and the second will happen on 30 September. The top three teams that emerge from each race day will proceed to compete in the finals.

13. Bakerzin Mooncake Booth 2017

14. Sowing Room Pop-up

There is going to be a retail showcase pop-up by the Sowing Room that will be happening this weekend. The Sowing Room is a social enterprise that creates beautiful works from textiles and fabrics that have been made by women who have suffered abuse and those who are at-risk of facing such treatment.

15. Sunrise on the Bandwagon Riverboat

16. Ballet Under the Stars

Celebrating its 22nd edition, Ballet Under the Stars presents a night like no other, and promises to be electric in every measure. The first weekend’s performances showcases three rousing and powerful contemporary creations – Sticks and Stones by Kinsun Chan, Age of Innocence by Edwaard Liang, and Organ Concerto by Nils Christe.

17. Young Talent Programme

This year’s Young Talent Programme winners’ solo exhibitions sees three talented artists – one from Vietnam and two from Singapore, each specialising in unique forms of art such as the interaction of substances with metal. The works are inspired by traditional Vietnamese folk narratives, space and sound and metal fabrication.
