Watch the First, Gritty Trailer for Michael Bay's Benghazi Thriller '13 Hours'

Michael Bay is stepping away from robots in disguise to a much more serious topic: the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, that left four people dead, including the U.S. ambassador, and caused a lot of grief for then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

In the first trailer for 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (above), we get a first look at John Krasinski (The Office) in his grittiest role to date as a Navy SEAL. James Badge Dale (Iron Man 3) also stars as a former SEAL, seen in the beginning of the trailer in an intense verbal standoff with Krasinski’s character.

The movie is based on Mitchell Zuckoff’s book Thirteen Hours: A Firsthand Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, and focuses on the handful of security team members who defended the U.S. diplomatic compound from Islamist militants on Sept. 11, 2012, the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The film is slated to land in wide release on Jan. 15, the same window as American Sniper this year. And the timing is no coincidence, observes Forbes.com, as that American battle tale brought in huge returns at the box office.

The release of 13 Hours also comes as the presidential primary season ramps up (the Iowa caucus is Feb. 1) and has the potential of becoming a political hot button as Clinton opponents show no signs of relenting in their criticism of her handling of the situation.
