Watch Miranda Lambert Join Chris Stapleton for a Heartbreaking Tribute to His Family's Late Dog

  • Miranda Lambert performed alongside Chris Stapleton at Nashville's iconic Bluebird Cafe during the 2021 ACM Awards.

  • The two stars sang "Maggie's Song" from Chris' 2020 album Starting Over.

Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert left ACM viewers in need of a tissue (or ten!) after their performance on Sunday evening's show. The two Grammy-winning country artists unexpectedly joined forces for an intimate, acoustic performance from Nashville's Bluebird Cafe.

"Maggie's Song" was written by Chris and released on his 2020 LP Starting Over as a sweet tribute to the Stapletons' rescue dog, Maggie, who died in 2019. Miranda also recently lost one of her furry friends (her dog Waylon passed away in 2020), and we're not sure how they made it through the song with dry eyes.

Honestly, this song needs to come with a warning because these lyrics are not for the faint of heart!

Let me tell you a story
About an old friend of mine
Somebody left her in a shopping cart
In a parking lot for us to find

Just a fuzzy black pup
She was hungry and feeling alone
We put her in the back seat
Told her we were taking her home

Miranda lent her vocal talents—and her well-known love for rescue animals of all kinds—to Chris' heartbreaking first-time performance of the song.

Naturally, fans were extremely emotional about the performance. One Twitter user commented, "This song is precious. Such a sweet way to honor Maggie and all those faithful companions we have lost," while another added, "Tears streaming-watching this with our girls Marlo and Peach Love, love, love!!! What a beautiful tribute to your sweet pup. Thank You!!!!"

Another fan was as unprepared as we were for the touching performance:

Between Miranda's stunning voice and passion for rescue pups, it seems like she was a perfect duet partner for the song.
