As you know, the Golden Globes are famously the most ~fun~ awards show. Much of that reputation has to do with the fact that this is the ceremony where nominees and other attendees (can) drink the whole time (seriously, more than 7,500 glasses of champagne are consumed throughout the event), but it’s also a good time because the worlds of movies and TV collide — and we get front row seats.
This year’s Golden Globes, hosted by Seth Meyers, kicks off Sunday, January 7th at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC.
If you’re not near a TV to catch the broadcast, you may be able to access it online in select markets by logging into NBC’s site with your television provider info. But, then again, you may not be able to: Viewers who tried to follow along with the Golden Globes action last year were disappointed to see that instead of streaming the show through its site, NBC’s “LIVE coverage” directed them to its Twitter feed, where highlights and celebrity retweets were posted.
BUT other streaming services like Sling and Hulu Live also offer NBC Live in some markets. Of course, if you’re not subscribed to those, or your market isn’t one of the selected ones (rude), this might present a problem. Though, honestly, experiencing the show on social media can sometimes be more fun, and clips generally go up on YouTube pretty quickly.
What you definitely *can* watch from the comfort of your couch is arguably the best part of the show anyway — the red carpet.
This year, the Globes are partnering with Facebook, not Twitter, to stream the celebrity arrivals to the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Full carpet coverage online will be available exclusively on the Golden Globes Facebook page from 6 to 8 p.m. ET (3 to 5 p.m. PT). Expect 360-degree videos and behind-the-scenes footage. Viewers can submit questions for stars, and more good stuff will show up on the page and on the @goldenglobes Instagram account and story.
“We always aim to create unique experiences which bring communities together, and partaking in the kickoff of award season in conjunction with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is a demonstration of our commitment to bring fans together through entertainment they enjoy,” Facebook’s Entertainment Partnerships head Sibyl Goldman said in a statement.
Not to mention, this year’s red carpet promises to be extra riveting and important. In a show of solidarity, many actresses and actors have pledged to wear all black to the ceremony to make a statement against sexual harassment in the industry, and we’re looking forward to conversations about relevant issues instead of the typical “Who are you wearing?” discussion.
Now, if only social media could figure out how to get us in on some of that champagne.
