WATCH: Four whole minutes of Alien: Covenant!

Christmas came early for Alien fans! About three months before Alien: Covenant is set to hit cinemas worldwide, 20th Century Fox has dropped a rather meaty four-minute clip titled Prologue: Last Supper.

In it, we are briefly introduced to the crew of the colony ship Covenant, which includes android assistant Walter (Michael Fassbender), ship captain Branson (James Franco) and crew member Daniels (Katherine Waterson). We catch glimpses of Billy Crudup and Danny McBride’s characters as well.

We also learn a bit about the plot: They’re on a colonisation mission and are the first manned large-vessel to have ventured this far into the galaxy. Watch the clip below:

If you sense that the clip feels familiar, you’re right! It’s filled with references to the Alien movies that have come before and also, director Ridley Scott gets to show off his foreshadowing game.

Branson is sick and sweaty – is it just the flu bug or a bug that’s going to burst out of his chest? Speaking of bugs, another crew member literally talks about “crazy bugs just outside the colonial post” which look like “cockroaches the size of giant poodles”. Hmmm!

Walter is a fascinating mix of the androids we’ve seen before: Ash, Bishop and even David. Fassbender is reportedly playing both Walter and David in Covenant. Wait… multiple Fassies? Sign me up!

But perhaps my favourite part is the homage to the late John Hurt and his character Kane from the very first Alien movie in 1979. The jovial set up of this ominously titled last supper is a throwback to the iconic dinner scene in Alien. One of the Covenant’s crew members starts choking to which McBride quips: “The food’s not that bad.”

That is the exact same line uttered by Parker in Alien before Kane keels over and gives us our very first bloody look at the dreaded chestburster. Here’s the clip from the 1979 movie for comparison:

Well played, Sir Ridley. Well played.

What do you geeks think of this prologue? Are you excited about Alien: Covenant?
