WATCH: Your first Star Trek: Discovery trailer

It’s finally here! Following a brief, first look at the long-awaited series yesterday, CBS has released the very first Star Trek: Discovery trailer. It’s being touted as a “cinematic” and  “grittier” kind of Star Trek, and it certainly does feel that way.

Centred on Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), it’s set a full decade before the original Star Trek of James T. Kirk and co. Another key character is the alien Lieutenant Saru (Doug Jones), who has an awfully cheerful skill set: “My people were biologically determined for one purpose alone: to sense the coming of death.”

Spock’s father Sarek (James Frain) also features, and there are hints that Burnham may have been raised on Vulcan. The tone is very different from the Star Trek movies of J.J. Abrams, while it’s exceedingly rare to have two women headlining a major TV series, not to mention two POCs.

Star Trek: Discovery has also been expanded to 15 episodes and will be followed by a discussion show called Talking Trek (not another one). This is good news for all Trekkers, given that the production schedule has fallen behind again and again.

Star Trek: Discovery is expected to premiere in mid or late 2017.
