Why Delayed Gratification In Relationships Is Important?

In a world where food and recognition are both instantly available in today’s times, the concept of delayed gratification is a virtue. It is the skill of learning to delay the impulse for immediate pleasure in favour of long-term satisfaction and growth.

In the case of this little girl in the video, she prioritises vitamins and cookies, both of which are important for her health over making her dad’s coffee.

Toddlers are attracted to the novelty of things and operating the coffee machine certainly gives the child instant gratification. However, she chooses to do the opposite, which makes this video all the more special.

Teaching your child about delayed gratification is a great way to show them the larger picture in life. Fully recognising and being aware of their impulse gives way to higher goal attainment. It also leads to the formation of new neural pathways through neuroplasticity.

Delayed Gratification In Relationships Can Better Decision-making Skills

As toddlers grow up, they are more apt at making decisions that are thoughtful and considerate rather than impulsive. Kids need to understand that impulses pass but long term goals will continue to stay there until you achieve them.

Decisions such as choosing to attend a party a night before the exam is a great example of instant gratification. Choosing to study instead and getting better marks is what we would call delayed gratification.

Delayed gratification helps avoid reacting in anger or with an impulse to your partner. It also helps build the right kind of communication between two individuals. For delayed gratification to work, partners need to have trust in their communication. Only then can you build a long-lasting relationship because both of you are looking at the bigger picture.
