Watch a Deleted Scene of Matt Damon in 'The Martian' (Exclusive)

In last year’s The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) survives alone on Mars for over a year before his dramatic rescue by NASA colleagues. Despite the vast scope of director Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film — which was nominated for seven Oscars — about 10 minutes of footage was left on the cutting room floor. Those deleted scenes can be seen for the first time in The Martian Extended Edition, available on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital HD and DVD on Tuesday.

While you’re waiting for the full director’s cut, check out the never-before-seen moment above from the end of the movie, in which Watney ponders the reasons for his rescue while gazing down at earth from the safety of the Hermes spacecraft. “I think about the sheer number of people who pulled together to save my sorry ass, and I can barely comprehend it,” Damon says in voiceover. “The cost of my survival was in the hundreds of millions of dollars, all to save a botanist with anti-authority issues. Why bother?” Back on Earth, he concludes that “every human being has an instinct to help each other out… and because of it, I had an entire planet on my side.”

In addition to the extended version of the film, the new edition of The Martian has a selection of special features to geek out over, including a documentary on the science behind re-creating the red planet for the movie, and a Q&A with NASA experts about plans for the first real-life manned mission to Mars. (Don’t forget the potatoes!)
