Not only did the Avengers split up during Captain America: Civil War, but we also saw the Captain put down his shield. And, apparently that means that Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America.

Wait — come again?!

Luckily, The Huffington Post spoke to the film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, to get to the bottom of this mystery (and to alleviate our complete and utter shock).

“I think him dropping that shield is him letting go of that identity,” said Joe. “[It’s] him admitting that certainly the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

However, we *will* see him again in the Avengers: Infinity War movies, according to The Huffington Post — that’s partially why he was not killed off in Captain America: Civil War. But, it’s speculated that he’ll go by a different name.

Some think Rogers will become “Nomad.”

ICYMI, that was the identity Cap took on in the comics when he lost faith in the government, reported Collider. We don’t think Rogers is gone for good — he better not be!

After all, sources say a “big purple guy” villain (aka Thanos) is coming, and Rogers would have to come help the Avengers out, right?!

So, what does the rest of the internet think of the news about Rogers?

Some people were supportive of the news.

Other fans were trying to speculate who’d replace him.

Still others came up with an excellent plan to process this information.

Personally, we can’t wait until Captain America: Civil War comes out so we can watch it at home (again and again and again). It’ll be avail on Digital HD, Digital 3D, and Disney Movies Anywhere on September 2, as well as Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, and On-Demand on September 13.

Brb, going to pre-order it now!
