Viral 543 Laksa stall closes due to declining business four months after opening

543 Laksa first opened its doors in March 2022 at Bukit Panjang and had a booming business, selling out their bowls of laksa within three hours. Sadly, on 30 June 2022, they bid farewell to their customers and closed down.

Helmed by Le Yong, a young hawker who used to be an ex-undertaker’s apprentice, 543 Laksa was known for selling limited quantities of about 50 to 75 bowls of laksa per day. Each bowl was affordably priced at S$5, S$4.50 for senior citizens and Facebook page sharers, and S$3.90 for Pioneer Generation.

Despite being affordably priced, their laksa contained generous portions of prawns, fragrant coconut milk infused broth, tau poktau gey, slices of fish cake and a whole boiled egg.  Their laksa stood out from others due to the lack of hum, affectionately known as cockles.

However, once Covid-19 restrictions were eased, 543 Laksa saw a decline as more people returned to the office. Plus, Singaporeans started to travel again— especially for the June holidays. To avoid food wastage, Le Yong started to prepare smaller batches of laksa each day. However despite his efforts, there were still leftovers that went unsold.

Looking at the downward trend, Le Yong decided to close the stall before the situation could get any worse, and announced in a Facebook post on 30 June that the stall would be closed till further notice.

It is tough to see such well-loved businesses close down, especially when we can see the heart and effort that young hawkers put into their meals. Nevertheless, fans of 543 Laksa need not be disheartened, as they shared in the same Facebook post that they will be back!
