You’ve Never Seen Anything Like Irving Harper’s Striking Paper Sculptures

Paper isn’t often thought of as a very precious or even permanent commodity—but the work of Irving Harper tells a different story entirely.

Over 37 years (from 1963 to 2000), the late designer—renowned especially for his influential midcentury furniture and objects—left a literal paper trail, creating over 300 intricate and imaginative sculptures from the material. The works range between abstract and more traditionally interpretive, with three-dimensional figures, masks, animals, and unique patterns and textures all making appearances in Harper’s vast catalogue of work.

Harper’s entire collection of paper sculptures—each fascinating in its own right—will be placed up for auction on Jan. 21, with a selection of the pieces currently on display at the Wright gallery in New York City. Bids on each piece are expected to reach into the thousands.
