Even immortals sometimes call it quits.

Saturday brought sad news for fans of the CW’s hit show Vampire Diaries. After eight wonderful seasons filled with blood-lust and drama, the show will be coming to an end. The formal announcement was made by executive producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec at a CW panel discussion at San Diego’s Comic Con convention on Saturday.

“When you spend eight years with people, that’s high school and college combined,” Plec said in a video that screened at the close of the panel discussion. “There is no other scenario where you are this close and this tight with the people you get to work with, and it’s been such a joy and such an honor.”

“We are one giant family, every single person here, there’s something very special about that and it comes from the top down,” Ian Somerhalder said in the video, which also starred cast members Actors Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Candice King, Kat Graham, Zach Roerig, Michael Trevino and Matthew Davis.

“Storytelling aside, being able to part of that is pretty great,” Plec remarked about her tight-knit relationship with the show’s cast and crew. Indeed each cast member and producer in the video commented on the show’s familial atmosphere.

As much as they will miss working with each other (and fans will surely miss watching the show) at least there’s one more season to enjoy before the final goodbye.

Watch the touching video that aired at Comic-Con online now for yourself. It’s as epic as the stories this show told and seems like the perfect tribute to such a fantastic and long-lasting TV show.

The final season airs October 21st on the CW.
