Upcoming 2020 film release dates in the UK
As people start adjusting to the new normal following the global coronavirus lockdown, cinemas have gradually begun reopening their doors.
Friday will see Cineworld and Vue opening their multiplexes after being closed in March, joining the Odeon and Showcases sites and independent cinemas that have been able to open since 4 July.
Although Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has been touted as the film to look forward to when it finally lands on 26 August, there’s still a huge wealth of great movies coming to cinemas before then, and beyond.
Here’s what you can look forward to seeing in UK cinemas for the rest of 2020.
Coming to cinemas in July
Unhinged - 31 July
Unhinged takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of a mother (Caren Pistorious, Slow West) who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy (Russell Crowe). ‘Road rage’ doesn't begin to describe what he's about to do to her and everyone she knows.

Proxima - 31 July
The story follows Sarah (Eva Green), a French astronaut training at the European Space Agency in Cologne. The only woman in the arduous training programme, she has been chosen to be part of the crew of a year-long space mission called ‘Proxima’. Putting enormous strain on her relationship with her seven-year-old daughter Stella (Zélie Boulant), the training begins to take its toll on them both as the life-changing launch looms ever closer.
Summerland - 31 July
Summerland follows the story of fiercely independent folklore investigator, Alice (Gemma Arterton) who secludes herself in her clifftop study, debunking myths using science to disprove the existence of other-worldly forces and magic. Consumed by her work, but also profoundly lonely, she is haunted by a love affair from her past.
100% Wolf - 31 July
The story centres on Freddy Lupin, heir to the leadership of a proud family line of werewolves. Positive he'll become the most fearsome werewolf ever, Freddy is in for a shock when on his 14th birthday his first “warfing” goes awry, turning him into a ferocious… poodle.
Flash Gordon (4K remaster) - 31 July
Studiocanal is excited to announce the new 4k, Ultra High Definition restoration of Mike Hodge’s cult classic Flash Gordon (1980), in honour of the film’s 40th anniversary. The film is now confirmed to play at Picturehouse Central and in select cinemas from 31 July, it will then be released on 4K UHD Collector’s edition, Blu-ray, Steelbook, DVD and digital on 10 August.

An American Pickle - 7 August
The film follows Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen), a struggling labourer who immigrates to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present-day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasn’t aged a day. But when he seeks out his family, he is horrified to learn that his only surviving relative is his great-grandson, Ben Greenbaum (also Seth Rogen), a mild-mannered computer programmer whom Herschel can’t even begin to understand.
Hope Gap - 7 August (previews), 28 August (wide/Curzon Home Cinema)
Hope Gap tracks the unravelling of three lives, through stages of shock, disbelief, and anger, to a resolution of sorts.
There are no villains; only good people who have lived too long with old mistakes and are now paying the price. There are no easy answers and no simple paths to redemption. A husband (Bill Nighy), a wife (Annette Bening) and a son (Josh O’Connor) are all forced to face hard truths, and out of those truths, to fashion new lives. In the end, Hope Gap is a story of survival. A story of hope.
