This U.S. City Has the Best Work-life Balance Culture, According to Reddit
New Orleans is more than a great party city.
You can live in the most beautiful place on Earth and still not be happy — or be able to enjoy your surroundings. If you’re spending long days at work, only to return home and be stressed about work, it can be hard to enjoy where you live.
Take Reddit user u/feel-duh-dino, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and works in health care. They shared that, “I’m exhausted from working with leadership/staff (all from UCSF, UC Davis, Stanford highly educated) who expect perfection and all the work to be done in a snap, when there simply isn’t enough time unless I work 10 hours x 5 days. Then when I leave work I absolutely love this region, but I’m so exhausted to even appreciate it and can’t stop thinking about work.”
To that, they posed the question: “Which cities have the best work-life balance culture?” and noted that they preferred life on the West Coast but were open to New England and some parts of the South.
Reddit responded. Of the over 260 comments at the time of writing, a few were so upvoted (that’s Reddit speak for “liked”), that it became apparent where in the U.S. you work and still enjoy life.
At the top of the list is New Orleans, a city where people like to have fun and where living is more important than working. One Redditor shared, “I work for a company with a very competitive and perfectionist culture, where working 50+ hours is the norm. I work in Dallas, but spent 6 months working out of the New Orleans office last year, and it was a 180 lol. Those people were not any better or worse at their jobs than anyone else in the company, but they actually had work life balance and the party atmosphere was so fun and refreshing. And these were people of all different ages and races partying it up together. There is definitely something so special about New Orleans!”
Following New Orleans, people shared that Denver had a great work-life balance, mainly because of the state’s outdoor culture.
One Redditor said, “It feels like nobody works in Denver, honestly. And the people at work constantly talk about their hikes, sports, and outdoor activities. Every time you step outside there’s always hundreds of people doing something in nearly every park.” Another Redditor shared that, “In Denver an unprompted ‘what do you do?’ is an invitation for people to talk about all of their outdoor hobbies rather than what they do for work.”
Following New Orleans and Denver, a few other U.S. cities stood out for their healthier approach to work-life balance: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Portland, Oregon; San Diego; and Salt Lake City.
