TVB artistes forgo charity walk this year

8 Jan – Unlike in previous years, TVB artistes did not participate in the "walking" part of the Community Chest's biennial charity event, Hong Kong & Kowloon Walk for Millions.

As reported on Mingpao, despite many stars attending the event, they left immediately after the launch and had zero contact with the public throughout the event. Even the usual traditional tea ceremony was cancelled.

In addition, only the local media agency were involved at this year's event, which was held at the Hong Kong Stadium.

Among celebrities who attended the launch include Kaman Kong, Kelly Fu, Gloria Tang, and Bowie Cheung, while Raymond Cho - who was originally scheduled to attend and recently sparked anger for expressing support for the Hong Kong police - was nowhere to be seen.

This sparked speculations that TVB was trying to avoid unnecessary issues, since it had previously angered supporters of the Hong Kong protests, who accused the company of being biased in its reporting of the situation in the city.

On the other hand, The Community Chest revealed that it will allocate HKD 39.25 million to support 24 social welfare member agencies in providing "Family and Child Welfare Services" this year, with 100 percent of the funds raised from the Walk programme will be "designated to maintain and strengthen family bonding and to assist the family members in establishing mutual support relationship without deduction of administrative costs."
