TVB accused of plagiarizing SMAP's commercial

24 Nov – TVB has recently been accused of plagiarising a Japanese commercial in its opening montage of the TVB 50th Anniversary Gala.

As reported on Mingpao, the opening montage shows Lai Lok Yi, Benjamin Yuen, Edwin Siu, Vincent Wong and Matt Yeung in white, before the colours gradually got added to their suits.

Netizens claimed that it was similar to the concept of a phone commercial that was done by the Japanese group SMAP - where they started with white and ended up with five different colours.

Netizens also pointed out that some of the scenes are also similar to the commercial. In one scene, Matt, who is wearing a red suit, is seen talking on the phone, which is similar to a scene from the commercial, where a purple-clad SMAP's Takuya Kimura can be seen holding a phone to his ear as well.

In another scene, Vincent can be seen driving a white car and shouting happily, which is no different to a scene in the commercial featuring Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, who wore a similar coloured suit.

Many are now blasting TVB for the apparent plagiarism, criticising them for the lack of creativity and the disrespect towards the original concept creator.

TVB has yet to address the issue at the time of writing.
