After months of (not so) patiently waiting, Negan’s victim was finally revealed during the first few seconds halfway through the Season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead. Though we had literally months to prepare for the heartbreaking moment — and you should know that yes, there are spoilers ahead — there’s still no way we’re ever going to get over the the loss of not one, but two main cast members. While we’re still in shock, Abraham and Glenn aren’t as in as much shock as they could be, because they’ve actually known about this for almost a YEAR.

A year!! We’ve barely known for 24 hours and we’re wondering who we can even continue on with the rest of this week!

Following the episode, Michael Cudlitz, who played Abraham, spoke with reporters about the episode, and confessed that they actually shot this big Negan + Lucille scene while they were filming the Season 6 finale.

“We finished [Season 6] just before Thanksgiving [2015], Cudlitz confessed. I’ve been sitting with it, Steven [Yenn’s] sitting with it, and the rest of the cast for a year now.”

And just how to do convince an entire PLANET that you don’t know the identity of Negan’s victim? Simple! Just lie to the whole WORLD about it.

“One of the good things is we were able to spread a rumor that not even the cast knew what was going to happen,” Cudlitz continued. “[Everyone would] find out when they came back, they’d filmed everybody’s death scene just in case, and they were in contract negotiations for some of the cast — all that was a lie. What that enabled us to do was not have to defend who was dead or hide who was dead for at least five months, which was great.”

“Our whole big thing was, ‘How could we possibly keep this secret because of the people out there who seem like it’s their only job in the world to ruin everyone else’s television viewing experience?’”

Okay, fine, yes we totally understand the need for everyone to tell some little lies to keep a huge reveal from slipping out. It’s also damn impressive that The Walking Dead was able to keep it so under wraps for a year.

And now, you know, we’re going to need a solid year to recover from it.
