Trust: These Braided Buns Will Help You Beat the Summer Heat

From Cosmopolitan

August is here, which means we’ve officially reached “sweat out your hair and your Zara dress” weather. It’s really freakin’ hot outside, to say the least. But instead of suggesting you throw your hair into a struggle ponytail, this week we’re giving you two cute options that’ll help keep you extra cool in the heat. Stasha Harris, our braid guru, went through The Braid Up archive to find the two best braided bun looks for you to copy this summer—and I have a feeling you’re going to love them.

Here’s everything you need to know if you decide to recreate these looks:

1. Prep your hair with a deep conditioner. This is an extra-important step you gotta take before you head over to your stylist. A deep-conditioning mask will lock in moisture and prevent breakage, giving your braids a strong foundation.

2. Coat your scalp with peppermint oil to soothe tension. If you’re dealing with scalp irritation after you get your hair braided (don’t stress—it’s pretty common), rub a few drops of peppermint oil to help relieve any itchiness and dryness. P.S. During your appointment, don’t be afraid to speak up if your stylist is pulling too hard or braiding too tight! It’ll save you from a lot of discomfort down the road.

3. Spritz on an oil to refresh your style. A lightweight oil spray that’s still deeply hydrating is a major key to keeping your braids from looking dull, dry, and blah.

4. Set your braids with two pumps of mousse in the a.m. This helps prevent frizz and flyaways from popping up throughout the day. Work the mousse through your hair in the morning, then hit it with a blow dryer to set it. BTW: You’ll want to opt for an alcohol-free mousse that won’t leave your braids stiff or crunchy.
