Amy Pascal Nails Down Attica Prison Riot Book For TriStar; Second Project In Works About 1971 Uprising
Blood in the Water, a book about the Attica prison riot, was just plucked away by producer Amy Pascal who will be developing the project for TriStar Pictures. Written by Heather Ann Thompson, the nonfiction tome about the 1971 riot in New York’s Attica State Prison just hit the street via Pantheon/Penguin Random House.
The news comes two months after Good Fear Film’s Chris Bender and Jake Weiner acquired life rights to Elizabeth Fink and Frank “Big Black” Smith to tell the story of the infamous four-day Attica prison uprising and its aftermath. Kristen Buckley is set to adapt.
Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy cover the state’s violent response, the victims’ decades-long quest for justice and include surprising information never previously made public.
Pascal and Rachel O’Connor are producing, and writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse will pen. The author is a historian at the University of Michigan, and also wrote the book Whose Detroit?
The deal was handled by Writers House literary agent Geri Thoma and CAA.
