Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks Gave the Carters the Most Special 75th Anniversary Gift

To celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary, former president Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter held an extravagant party that hosted 300 guests, and among them were country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.

The event took place on July 10, and a few hours before the party started, per People, Brooks and Yearwood took the opportunity to present a very special gift to the couple—one that couldn’t really be wrapped.

To honor the year the Carters got married, the singers gave them a restored red convertible that was built in 1946—the same year the couple married.

The car was actually delivered to their home in Plains, Georgia on Wednesday, per People, and was hidden by the Secret Service to keep it a surprise. When the Carters finally saw it, they were “very excited,” according to their close friend Jill Stuckey.

“Bright eyes and big smiles and ... very excited time, but there was so much special [about the day] because the people that were here from all aspects of their lives,” she told the publication.

Alongside stars like Yearwood and Brooks, also in attendance were Bill and Hilary Clinton, the Carter’s Habitat for Humanity peers, friends, family, and more. “There were people from their church. Nancy Pelosi was here, and the Clintons were here and Ted Turner—who they’ve gone fishing with forever and are close personal friends with,” Stuckey said. “All aspects of their life were covered, so it was just a memory lane.”

Jimmy actually came up with the idea to have the party back in November, and they’d been planning it ever since. “He still, at 96, managing every little aspect of this special get together,”Stuckey added.

It was a three-hour shindig with live music from pianist David Osborne and a sentimental toast from the Carters’ son Chip. And to end the night, the couple themselves spoke to the crowd.

“It’s wonderful to celebrate with so many friends. It’s just so good to have you all here and I thank you for making it a good evening,” Rosalynn told the guests. Upon taking the mic, Jimmy took the opportunity to honor his wife.

“To my wife Rosalynn, I want to express a particular gratitude for being the right woman that I chose,” he said.

Stuckey added that Jimmy invited everyone in attendance to join them for church the next morning, calling it “an all-weekend celebration.”

In a previous interview with PBS News Hour, the couple shared their secrets to a long, happy marriage. “I think we give each other space and we try to do things together,” Rosalynn said. “We’re always looking for things we can do together, like birding and fly-fishing.”

Jimmy also said they never go to bed angry. “At the end of the day, we try to become reconciled and overcome all the differences that arose during the day,” he explained. “We also make up and give each other a kiss before we go to sleep still in bed.”
