Trick ‘R Treat Sequel Still On The Cards, Says Director

Michael Dougherty may not have delivered a sequel to his cult favourite ‘Trick ‘R Treat’ yet – but he hasn’t forgotten about it.

Speaking to Slash Film, the writer and director says a follow-up to his Halloween-set horror movie is still on the cards, but that fans shouldn’t be too impatient.

The matter arose as Dougherty has worked on some new ‘Trick ‘R Treat’ digital Halloween decorations, for which he has shot some new footage featuring the film’s terrible trick-or-treater Sam.

Dougherty says, “I’m going to speak carefully about that [Laughs], because the moment I utter a word about the sequel, everybody starts salivating. It is very much my intention to make the sequel. Legendary is very committed to making the movie.

“Creatively, it’s in process. When it actually happens, I don’t know. But, hopefully, stuff like this — the digital decorations, the comic books, the merchandise, and what have you — will tide people over and I can finally get around to making it.

“Nothing would make me happier than returning to that universe. Like, I miss Sam. When we were shooting these vignettes, I was getting a little bit emotional because I would love nothing more than to hang out with Sam again for a year or two, bringing him back to the big screen.”

Despite having a high profile cast including Brian Cox and Anna Paquin, and Bryan Singer as producer, ‘Trick ‘R Treat’ had shaky beginnings, when – for reasons which remain unclear – Warner Bros pulled it from its scheduled October 2007 release date and left it sitting on the shelf for two years.

The film wound up going straight to DVD in autumn 2009, but quickly became a seasonal favourite among horror fans.

An anthology movie, it follows several separate stories taking place in a small middle-American town on Halloween night, but also takes a particular interest in delving into the origins and deeper meanings of the holiday’s macabre traditions.

Although it’s been some time coming, Dougherty has hopes for as many as two follow-up films, potentially spanning different regions and historical settings:

“I think it’d be great to make it a trilogy, at least. So fingers crossed. For me, I think every film should explore a different aspect of Halloween.

“I felt like the first film was the very traditional, suburban Halloween that we all have some memory of. But as I’ve grown up over the years, I’ve lived everywhere from Columbus, Ohio to New York to L.A., and I find that the holiday is very different depending on where you live.

“Or even time periods. I don’t see why we should be limited to just present day stories. Halloween is an amazing holiday because it evolves depending on where you live and the time period.”

Since ‘Trick ‘r Treat,’ Dougherty has also written and directed the Christmas horror comedy ‘Krampus’ which hit cinemas last December.
