Not everyone loves the new ‘IT’ trailer…

It’s already taken the internet by storm – the recent trailer for the upcoming remake of Stephen King’s ‘IT’ gained the most views in a single day on YouTube. And it’s been a talking point amongst horror fans since it appeared online.

But not everyone likes what they see…

Especially not professional clowns.

During an interview with MEL Magazine, real-life clown Guilford ‘Gilly’ Adams explains why the new ‘IT’ remake is bad for business.

“It’s gonna be bad for clowns,” he said. “It’s a dying profession. And the people who do it and scrape together a living have to grapple with the fact that it’s cool and hip not to like clowns.”

Unfortunately, the upcoming ‘IT’ remake isn’t the only bad press they’ve had to contend with. Anti-clown sentiment really hit its stride last year, after a number of ‘creepy clown’ incidents were reported across the USA.

“We just experienced a nice break from the scary clown meme from last October,” said fellow clown Nick ‘Mr Nick’ Kane. “And just when things are starting to normalize, the IT trailer comes and it’s like, ‘Here we go again’.”

The one thing they all agree on? It’s never been harder to be a clown.

And the ‘IT’ movie isn’t exactly helping matters.

“The ultimate prick in this [IT movie] is that it’s going to turn young consumers away from an art form that’s sweet and nice and not about the Kardashians and Minecraft,” said Adams.

Of course, it’s not all about the business. One of the main upsides to clowning, used to be the sheer joy and happiness a clown would bring to the neighbourhood children. But now, it’s not quite the same as it used to be. Although many clowns got into the business for that reason, it seems the ‘creepy clown’ image is creating a barrier between clowns and their kids.

“No one sticks up for a clown,” said Adams. “The only thing cooler to dislike is a mime. It’s silly and stupid, and I wish people would focus on the good clowns out there.”

Sadly, it looks as though they’re going to have a tough time ahead of them. The ‘IT’ trailer has already spread far and wide, with millions of fans terrified by Pennywise already. And it’s only going to get worse once the film is released.

‘IT’ stars Bill Skarsgård, Finn Wolfhard, Megan Charpentier, Nicholas Hamilton, Jaeden Lieberher, Sophie Lillis, Steven Williams and Owen Teague.

Andrés Muschietti directs based on a script by Gary Dauberman, Chase Palmer, and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

‘IT’ opens in cinemas on 8 September 2017.
