A new manager has emerged as a candidate for the Tottenham head coach role after they ended all links with Julian Nagelsmann – and he could hand the club their first trophy since 2008.

Nagelsmann was widely tipped to become Tottenham’s new manager following his Bayern Munich exit and the club’s sacking of Antonio Conte. The German has good pedigree, having been in charge of RB Leipzig prior to his spell at the Allianz Arena and then helped Bayern win last season’s Bundesliga title.

However, there were rumours Nagelsmann was not convinced by Tottenham’s project. He wanted some expensive, big-name players if he was to officially join the club, something chairman Daniel Levy was unsure about.

There was a big update on Tottenham’s hunt for a new manager on Friday. Alasdair Gold, football.london’s Tottenham correspondent, revealed the club had distanced themselves from Nagelsmann.

Spurs have ‘plenty of respect’ for him but insist he ‘is not being considered’ for the job.

Other options for Levy include Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso and Luciano Spalletti of Napoli.

Alternatively, Levy could bring in Simone Inzaghi, who is currently in charge of Inter Milan.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica (via Sport Witness) have revealed Inzaghi is one of the managers Spurs are considering as they look for Ryan Mason’s permanent replacement.

Spurs, as well as several other clubs in Europe, have been impressed by the job Inzaghi has done this season. Inter are in a great position to qualify for next season’s Champions League, currently occupying third spot in Serie A. They have a five-point lead on fifth-placed rivals AC Milan, having played the same amount of games.

Inter could end up appearing in the final of this year’s competition, too. They beat Milan 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final.

La Repubblica explain how ‘no one would be surprised’ if Spurs called Inzaghi and asked him to become their new boss. It is also revealed that Chelsea looked into capturing the 47-year-old, although they have instead opted to bring in Mauricio Pochettino and have reached an agreement with him.

Should Spurs land Inzaghi, then he could end their long wait for a trophy. At Lazio, he lifted one Coppa Italia and two Supercoppa Italianas. Since moving to Inter, Inzaghi has won another Coppa Italia and two more Supercoppa Italianas.

Another reason Inzaghi’s capture may be beneficial for Spurs is that he could help them sign some of Inter’s best players. Spurs have been linked with Alessandro Bastoni, Marcelo Brozovic and Denzel Dumfries.

Meanwhile, Spurs are growing in confidence they can sign a Southampton star following Saints’ relegation to the Championship, according to a report.
