In the world of rising internet scams, the rule of thumb has always been to steer clear of ads that seem too good to be true. Unfortunately, that’s causing a problem for a local startup that is actually looking to give $4,000 to a shopper willing and able to spend the sum on him- or herself.

ShopBack, a local e-commerce site where you can shop for products from Taobao or Zalora and receive cash rebates, has been looking for a part-time chief shopping officer available this March.

According to a spokesperson, ShopBack has already posted the job advertisement on several popular sites such as Jobstreet, and received incredulous enquiries over the legitimacy of the job opportunity. The startup has extended the application period, which now ends on 24 February.

But after looking at the job description, we can’t blame people for wondering.

“Responsibilities: Shop for yourself on any 500+ online stores via ShopBack, including Singapore Airlines, FoodPanda, Cathay Cineplexes, Uber and more. SGD4,000 shopping funds will be given to power your execution. All Cashback saved in your ShopBack account is yours to own,” stated on the website.

The chosen candidate will be allowed to work remotely. Applicants only need to make a short YouTube video sharing interesting facts about themselves, why they want the job and the best bargains they’ve found online.

Other requirements include three years of online shopping experience on both desktop and mobile.
