Tony Leung's Supervillain has been renamed Wenwu
6 Apr – The change of Tony Leung's villain name in the upcoming Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" has had netizens speculating if it has anything to do with the recent anti-Asian hate crimes occurring in the US, as reported on Epoch Times.
It is noted that Chinese fans were unhappy back when Tony was announced to play the role of the supervillain The Mandarin, as many noted the similarities between the character with Fu Manchu - a 1912 character created by British author Sax Rohmer that is now widely considered racist.
It has also sparked a boycotting campaign by some mainland fans, demanding Tony to resign and threatening to permanently block the actor if he refuses to comply.
No further details had since been released about Tony's character in the movie, that is until Marvel recently launched a new set of tie-in merchandise, with one of them being the figurine of The Mandarin, which has quietly been renamed Wenwu.
Although not much can be said about the figurine, it is worth mentioning that The Mandarin's Ten Rings have also been updated, with the character wearing it as an armband instead of actual rings.
Nonetheless, the studio has yet to confirm whether Tony's character in the movie will match the figurine.
