Tony Leung is the first Asian star to win the Chaplin Award

The actor accepted his award from Chaplin's granddaughter Kiera in Shanghai

20 Nov – Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu Wai recently became the first Asian star to receive the Chaplin Award.

As reported on Epoch Times, the actor, who accepted the award from Kiera Chaplin - granddaughter of the celebrated English filmmaker - in Shanghai recently, said that he felt honoured by the recognition.

"When I was young, Chaplin was the greatest performing artiste of the time. I am fortunate to receive this trophy from his granddaughter," he said.

Established in 1972, the Chaplin Award is presented annually to those who made outstanding contributions to films throughout their career.


Winners in recent years include Helen Mirren, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Barbra Streisand, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Dustin Hoffman.

Tony is a multi-award-winning actor who has worked in many great movies such as "In the Mood for Love", "2046", "The Grandmaster", and "Chungking Express".
