For a minute there, it looked like we'd seen the end of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In August, the deal between Disney, which owns the MCU, and Sony, which owns Spider-Man, was said to have been '100 percent dead'.

It looked like it was the last time we'd see Tom Holland's Peter Parker rubbing shoulders with the rest of the Avengers.

Or perhaps even rubbing shoulders with anyone, with a third Spider-Man stand-alone film looking potentially doubtful.

But it's now emerged, via The Hollywood Reporter, that Tom Holland himself put in 'multiple calls' to both Disney boss Bob Iger and Sony boss Tom Rothman, asking them personally to resolve their differences.

Then on 27 September, it was revealed that there will be a third Spider-Man film after all, and that the British actor's friendly neighbourhood webslinger would also appear in 'at least' one more Disney-based Marvel movie too (so far unspecified).

According to THR, money was the issue, with both studios 'digging in their heels' after the financial successes of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, but finally agreed that Disney would get 25 percent of the movie's box office, and pony up 25 percent of the budget.

Confirming the news, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said: “I am thrilled that Spidey's journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.

“Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

The third Spider-Man movie (following Spider-Man: Far From Home's $1.13 billion haul) is set for release on 16 July, 2021.
